I've been thinking a lot of my good friend David S. I was doing a service at the old folks home the other day and some of the staff and residents were watching soaps before we started.
There was this good looking actor over-doing his lines - telling some beautiful woman he just needed to "get things figured out for awhile, could she handle that? I just need to figure out who killed Roger, or else I'm finished..."
And for some reason I thought of Dave...
I've realized that a lot of the 'relational wisdom' that I've gained over the years has come from him. Stuff like - never say anything crappy about your friends girlfriend - because they might get married... stuff like don't take yourself too seriously, he's helped shape a lot of my 'diplomatic' language (as in after mutual conversations we've walked away and he's been like, 'why on earth did you say that? Are you crazy?')
I've also seen him make relationships work even though they are in terrible circumstances.
The most meaningful things in life we have are relationships. And the quality of them is left in our 'mostly inadequate - try-it-as-you-go, incapable' hands. Solid friendships are a desired, sought after, and often times elusive commodity - yet, I have been 'Blessed' with some great friends.
