Had the priviledge of hanging with some really good friends last weekend. We put on a student 'winter weekend' at the Lake. Not to be disappointed it was definitely frigid... Anyway - weather aside,
After one of the sessions Kelly Graham, Chris Mackenzie and I were looking at some old books that are on a shelf in the south end of the Lodge. We came across one that outlined how living together before marriage was wrong - biblically, and how you shouldn't do it.
There was at least a hundred pages to the book??? - and I found it amusing (tragically, I am somewhat jaded) - the whole premise, to write a book outlining why a particular sin was wrong. And although there is no way in hell I would read that book - I'm sure the target audience would not be a christian one.
In my life I may write a book - it seems to me there are a bizzillion incredible topics that one could pick in and around the Kingdom of God - positive, edifying - even attractive to the 'unchurched' or whatever. "Why" write a book outlining why one particular sin is wrong - it seems quite stale to me.
It even seemed more stale to me when Kelly said that he'd heard some 'good Christian folk' had in his lifetime given this book to couples living together... what would this conversation look like?
"Uuh, listen - it's so nice that you two... people have started coming to our church - here's a book that will do... you people a lot of good. People like you have learned a lot from it. So, read it, and God bless you."
Anyway we started talking about the fact that maybe we were wrong to be so critical - maybe we should read the book - maybe we could've changed the theme of our weekend with these teenagers from that of "God loves you, knows you, and has a plan for your life..." to that of "You're sinners, you suck, and even if you change you'll still never be good enough..."
I'm sorry this is a text based entry - when I started writing this post I did find it amusing - but now that I'm at the end of it... it doesn't seem that funny. Maybe because it isn't.
Christians can be pretty crappy.
