Recent Readings

Reading in the latest EKG report(empowering kingdom growth) and seeing the emphasis on planting churches in Canada and overseas... I was interested and encouraged to read that the 3 cities that are being looked at for priority church plants were Montreal, Calgary, and "somewhere" on Vancouver Island. I'm not entirely sure why these cities were chosen - I know the urbanization of the globe has been looked at by the FMC and the decision to focus on cities with ministries and funding was made. Some thoughts I have...

I often think of Calgary and the culture that goes along with the city. Money, youth, energy - have all contributed to a very materialistic, yet promising vibe I get when I'm there. There's a feeling in Calgary that makes you want to "do something" - while that's rather ambiguous, I think it comes from the development, and the energy the city emits. It'd be a great place to do something for the kingdom (a church plant) - especially since we have a church established there already. The opportunity to get into the downtown core - or to partner for joint events - or whatever would be a nice bonus. I think the proximity with the mountains would also be nice...

Montreal is the heart of Quebec - a province that is almost totally unreached by the evangelical church - while I have tremendous respect for my Catholic brethren - it seems many French Canadians have become disillusioned with the church and it has had a detrimental impact on the province. The suicide rate is the highest in Quebec - along with alarming statistics that recognize some of the highest percentages per capita in divorce, violent crime, alcohol and substance abuse... there is a spiritual alarm being raised in Quebec. I heard a couple from Quebec speak on behalf of their province and their people and it was powerful - a message of reconciliation and repentance between French and English Canadians. The fact that their stance came from a conviction in their spirit was very moving to witness - the husband had been involved in street gangs that would beat down English Canadians - and from that (being years ago) - he was able to communicate the depth of feelings and atmosphere of the people (spiritually) very well. Quebec would be a challenge - perhaps the greatest challenge... however, with the incredible odds seemingly against the church, there could be the greatest occasion for evangelism and possibility of revival.

Vancouver Island is the meeting place of witchcraft for Canada. I've read that the highest number of witches live on that Island - and that compounded by the fact that there is a very low evangelical presence makes the need for a church plant very real... spiritual warfare and the dynamic of intercession would be two things that would stand out to me in this ministry. BC and the west in general sort of has this earthy, loosey-goosey "anything goes" mentality (that's my sense spiritually whenever I've been there) however, the darkness is real... and it is clear that anything does not go -

In all these places - and across Canada the need is real. I feel a stirring in that deep place where inspiration grows and excitement increases -

"What does God have in store for Canada @ this point in history?"

"What is His dream for this generation of believers?"
