Jean in Chicago

"War must always be the last resort, not only because of the human suffering it produces but also because of the inevitable unforeseen consequences. But if it must come to war, I argue that the world should respond through the United Nations. This is the best way to give legitimacy to the use of force in these circumstances.
The price of being the world’s only superpower is that its motives are sometimes questioned by others. Great strength is not always perceived by others as benign. Not everyone around the world is prepared to take the word of the United States on faith."
- Jean Chretien

See the whole speech which was quite good - (Prime Minister Jean Chrétien gave the following speech to the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, February 13, 2003 (notes courtesy of the Prime Minister's Office).

On top of every consequence I can imagine, my concern with this war is also the inevitable unforeseen consequences..
Some friends on their blogs have pointed to Brian McLaren's - "sermon to Bush" - identifying with some of the thoughts he raises. I found some of the things he listed to personally pack a bit of a punch - I'd recommend the read. I thought the fact it came from an American pastor validated the content as well.

Thoughts on the war? Let me know...
